I'm always skeptic about thrillers. I feel that the style most thrillers writters write, Follett himself, is dry and not emotional.
This one superated my expectations. Really good novel. Not the usual historical fiction I'm used to with Follett but an amazing suspenseful book!
Great read! An interesting concept, and one that showed much potential, but overall fell flat. My first guess was that Steve was a schizophrenic or had multiple personality disorder - I think this would have been a more more interesting turn of events, considering Jeannie's research into criminality and nature vs.
Could someone who appeared good have the capabilities to do evil? I guess that was the author's point throughout the novel, anyway, but I wish he would have delved deeper into the nature v An interesting concept, and one that showed much potential, but overall fell flat.
I guess that was the author's point throughout the novel, anyway, but I wish he would have delved deeper into the nature vs.
One thing I noticed is that Follet likes to tell, not show. His characters come to some conclusion, and this conclusion ends up being the right answer.
I get that a few of his characters are very intelligent, but I would have much rather been shown why the conclusion in question was correct rather than have the character go "OMG this is what happened" and that be the end of it.
It was anticlimactic. For example, when Jeannie realizes that there must me more than three twins and jumps immediately to the conclusion that the "twins" are really clones.
Interesting , and her theory is later proved correct, but I would have liked more insight into the cloning process, more educated proof and back story, rather than the great lengths Barrington, Barck, and Proust went to to cover up their ethical blunder.
Overall, too much time was focused on the characters themselves rather than what caused their actions which isn't a bad thing, sometimes, but it retracted from the scientific back story of the clones, as stated previously.
And again, not enough time was given to the more scientific aspect of cloning and genetics, in general. As that was a huge part of the novel concerning the clones, it should have been given more air time.
Other things that annoyed me mostly from the beginning of the book : Why is Jeannie so sure Steve didn't rape Lisa.
He's a complete stranger to her! There's really nothing in his defense for Jen to be so sure he's innocent. And then, when it's discovered that Steve is a clone, Jeannie isn't sure she can trust him - not knowing if he's really Steve or one of the clones.
Hot and cold much? I get that Jen is unpredictable, putting on different facades in the lab and out, and that she does things that seem uncharacteristic or contradictory, but I kind of wanted to smack her.
She got very annoying after a while. Why wasn't the room where Lisa and Jeannie questioned Dennis under surveillance, so someone would know if something went wrong?
Having one security guard in a room with a murderer and two strange women makes no sense. So Dennis was free to stick a knife to Jean's eye whilst the incompetent guard was frolicking with the loose rat, and thus demand she take off her panties.
I find it hard to believe there were no cameras in the room to see that. Also concerning Dennis and his need for panties; Why didn't Jen tell the guard that during his escapade to kill the rat, all that Dennis did?
Dennis made a plan before she even arrived to take her panties by force and she does nothing to ensure he's punished for that.
All because she doesn't want to be stuck at the jail filling out paperwork and she doesn't want the warden to see her underwear.
Okay, so she's shook up from the ordeal, okay. But still. For a scientist, she's kind of dumb and illogical.
Needless to say, I'll be returning this book. Thankfully it was free from a thrift shop, whence it shall return. Doctor Jean Jeannie Ferrami is a scientist studying the causes of criminal behavior by comparing sets of twins raised separately, especially when one is a criminal and the other a law-abiding citizen.
When her friend, the lab technician Lisa Hoxton is raped, a man called Steve Logan is accused of that crime.
But Steve is a Law student and he happens to be one of Ferrami's study subjects. Meaning he has a twin brother who was raised by different parents.
Ferrami knows Steve has indeed a twin, D Doctor Jean Jeannie Ferrami is a scientist studying the causes of criminal behavior by comparing sets of twins raised separately, especially when one is a criminal and the other a law-abiding citizen.
Ferrami knows Steve has indeed a twin, Dennis Pinker, who has been convicted for murder and is at that moment in jail.
According to Jeannie Ferrami's hypothesis, if Pinker is the "bad" twin, then Steve is the "good" one. Plus, nothing in Steve Logan's bevahiour suggests he was capable of raping someone.
She is decided to investigate the issue further but is met with some obstacles. Headstrong and willing to find the truth, and clear Steve, Jeannie will do whatever is necessary.
Even if her professional and personal future become at stake. Because there is a secret and some very powerful men are willing to do whatever it takes to protect it.
First Ken Follett book I read that it is not historical fiction. This is more like science fiction, involving genetic engineer.
The main theme is nature vs. Or there is more to it? A secret experiment in the seventies produces human clones who become aggressive and highly intelligent young men.
They all have a tendency to misjudge situations and get themselves in trouble. One turns out to be a rapist and when a scientist studying twins decides to investigate further, the very same men behind the genetics experiments try everything to keep a secret.
They are even willing to destroy Ferrami's life. Yes, all this sounds very exciting and I thought I was in for a treat.
I found the beginning slow and it takes time for things to warm. The end was certainly the best part, because is when there is more action.
I also don't really get the name of this book, since there are more than three clones. I also thought Ferrami would get conclusions very fast and that felt a bit fake.
Especially when she drew the right conclusion about something that might not have been that obvious. I didn't like Ferrami that much.
She has great qualities, but ruins everything by being too impulsive and losing her head too often. Some parts of the story were also a bit predictable, but the secrets were good and fortunately I was able to be surprised.
Especially towards the end. In the end, the most exciting about this book for me was knowing why they had done it and how it was possible to have a lot of twins walking around, from different parents.
But I wished the book had been more engaging since the beginning. Unfortunately it wasn't a book that managed to keep me glued to it.

It's written in a very modern style. There has been a lot to know from the characters of Dr.
Jeannie Ferrami. The concept of cloning is really awesome. In a nutshell this novel contains drama, mystery, romance, research, science, perseverance, bravery and lots of other things.

Anyway, The Third Twin still leaves no doubt about the mastery of the author. I devoured it up to the last page!
I read this book several times in junior high and high school and never got tired of it. The scientific aspects are intriguing and convincing, and the story just zips right along.
It almost inspired me to become a genetic researcher! Yet another fascinating story from my favorite author. I am not a fan of mystery thriller.
But this one was very gripping novel. Jeanie, a psychology professor, researches about twins and their criminal nature.
She is also a computer literate and wrote a programme to search insurance and other medical database for identifying twins.
